For MEPF BIM, the important lesson is to establish units, families, annotations, schedules and code references at project setup rather than relying on a generic template.

Australian projects generally use metric units and may reference Australian Standards and project-specific specifications. Drawing conventions and terminology can also differ from UK practice despite historical similarities.

A common mistake is assuming every project in a country follows one universal drawing standard — the project BEP, employer requirements, consultant standards and contractor templates can all override generic assumptions.

Build a project-specific BIM standard from the BEP, templates, examples, specifications and approved drawings, then test a small sample before producing the full package. For an international outsourcing team, this is more reliable than memorising national conventions — the goal isn't to "draw like an American" or "draw like an Australian," it's to deliver exactly what the project's BEP requires.
